  • Biography

In 1912, Gustav Klucis (1895-1938) began training in art, before he went to Moscow in 1918. There he studied art under Kazimir Malevich and Antoine Pevsner. From 1924 to 1930, he was a professor of color theory at the art school Wchutemas.

Klucis created primarily political art for the Soviet state. In 1938 he was arrested and executed shortly before he went to visit the New York World's Fair, despite his loyalty to the state. Klucis became famous especially with his political photomontages, which he established next to Hannah Höch, Raoul Hausmann and El Lissitzky, and for which he often acted as a model himself.
