Hamilton Sloan was born in Belfast in 1945 and is well known for his paintings of traditional Irish scenes. For most of his artistic career, his art involved the use of watercolours, the rugged scenery and way of life he witnessed in Donegal. These heavily influenced his work and swayed him to switch to oils. Before taking up painting as a profession, Sloan worked at the Ulster Museum and created many of the taxidermy pieces on display there.
