    Harold Speed was an English painter, painting theorist, and watercolorist. He was born in an unknown year and place. He studied architecture but later turned to drawing and won a gold medal in 1890 for his studies of live models. He studied at the Royal Academy from 1891 to 1896 and traveled to Belgium, France, Italy, and Spain to specialize in social portraits. He is known for his practical teachings in the book The Science and Practice of Oil Painting, published in 1924. Harold Speed flourished in the 19th and 20th century
