Hartmut Ritzerfeld was trained as a window dresser from 1965 to 1968 before studying with Joseph Beuys (painting, object and action art) and Karl Kneidl (stage design) from 1969 to 1976 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
In 1975 he became a master student of Joseph Beuys. This was followed by a study visit to Zurich. He then lived for a short time in Aachen and then moved back to Stolberg in his parents' house.
