Heinz Friedrich was born 1924 in Schwetzingen and initially completed an apprenticeship as a mason and construction technician. After the Second World War, he studied at the arts academy in Stuttgart between 1946 and 1948, and the following year at the academy in Karlsruhe under Wilhelm Schnarrenberger (1892-1966) and Otto Laible (1898-1962).
