    Hendrick van Balen I was a Flemish painter. He also worked on stained glass windows and as a decorator of Flemish furniture.

    His father was an oil and candle merchant, but Van Balen acquired nonetheless a good education, learning from the books that were available in the shop. According to Carel van Mander, he was trained by Adam van Noort (c.1561-1641), but other biographers mention Martin de Vos (c.1532-1603). Amongst his pupils were Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), Gerhard Seghers (1591-1651) and Frans Snyders (1579-1657). In 1609, he was appointed dean of the Guild of St. Luke.
