About Henry Silkstone Hopwood

    Henry Silkstone Hopwood was born in Markfield, near Leicester. He studied at Manchester School of Art and trained with a firm of lithographers. He traveled the world as a deckhand on a tall ship.

    His subject matter is extremely diverse. He was also taught by Bouguereau at the Academie Julian in Paris where he met his fellow "Staithes" member Arthur E. Friedenson.

    He was also good friends with Fred Mayor and Spence Ingall. They spent their summers painting around Runswick Bay and Staithes. During the winter they retreated to the South of France and North Africa where Ingall had a house.
