    Henry William Kirkwood was a professional artist who arrived in New Zealand from Scotland around 1879. He initially lived in Dunedin and Nelson, moving to Wellington around 1900. He lived in various places in New Zealand, including New Plymouth, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Napier, and Auckland. He travelled extensively around New Zealand to find subjects for his paintings and had many pupils. Most of his known work is in oils on both board and canvas, depicting South Island lakes and mountains, especially Fiordland. In 1924, he moved to Sydney to live with his son and died there in 1925. His work is represented in the collection of the Museum of New Zealand – Te Papa Tongarewa.
