    Like many of the Swedish artists in Paris in the 1880s, Herman of Sillén attributed the impressionist gray paintings. His role models in the marine art are not unexpectedly found among the Dutch masters of the 17th century, and his first paintings reveal influences from both Holland and France. After all, it was above all the silver-shimmering colorite that he embraced from the impressionist French school. Later, when Sillen was staying in Berlin and received guidance from Norrmann Hans Gude in his studio, the French flu faded somewhat.
