His role models in the marine art are not unexpectedly found among the Dutch masters of the 17th century, and his first paintings reveal influences from both Holland and France. After all, it was above all the silver-shimmering colorite that he embraced from the impressionist French school. Later, when Sillen was staying in Berlin and received guidance from Norrmann Hans Gude in his studio, the French flu faded somewhat. Herman of Sillén grew up in Stockholm with a single mother and four siblings. The modern early encouraged his artistic and musical appeal, herself she was very talented in both of these subjects.
