    Zens studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1961 to 1967, and in 1962 he participated in Oskar Kokoschka’s Salzburg Summer Academy. He completed his diploma under Franz Elsner and earned his teaching credentials in 1966.

    He initially worked as a secondary school art teacher before taking a position at the Vienna Academy in 1975. Herwig Zens became a professor in 1987 and later served as head of the Institute for Art Education.
