  • Biography

    Hawaiian artist Hon Chew Hee, born on Maui, is best known for his watercolors and serigraphs. He was educated in Hawaii and China and in San Francisco at the California School of Fine Art. He also studied in New York at the Art Students League and Columbia University and in Paris with Andre Lhote and Fernand Leger.

    From 1932 to the beginning of World War II, he lived in San Francisco where he founded the Chinese Art Association. For the remainder of his life, he lived in Kaneohe, a suburb of Honolulu.

    In 1991, Hee began working on a mural, 10 feet by 160 feet, for the Honolulu International Airport. Two years later, on May 17, 1993, he died in his home town.
