From 1966-67, the artist worked freelance in Altentreptow and Mecklenburg. In 1972, Leifer took up his second residence in Sanz in Greifswald. The artist developed a friendship with Otto Niemeyer-Holstein. From 1988-93, Leifer was a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden. From 1993, the artist was active in Sanz in Greifswald.
