About Howard Bennett

  • Biography from Nancy Moure - biographer

Artist of portrait drawings in Dispatch, 1941. “Private Bennett of Headquarters Detachment, a former fashion illustrator for I. Magnin & Co., San Francisco, occupies his time sketching life-like portraits of the camp officers. To date he has finished portraits of many of the higher ranking officers, two of whom include Brigadier General Charles H. White, Camp Commander, and Colonel Charles L. Sampson, Commander of the 16th Infantry Group. Bennett is especially proud of the portrait he did of Corporal Herald W. Roberts, for whom the camp is named, because he used as a model a 27-year-old retouched photograph, yet the sketch is said to be a true likeness of the World War hero,” Dispatch, May 16, 1941, p. 6.
