    Hubert Berke began in the early 1930s to study painting under Fritz Burmann at the Art Academy in Königsberg. In 1933 he moved to the Düsseldorf Art Academy and became a student of Paul Klee. Berke was concerned after the war with the abstract painting of Informel and became famous.

    In addition to his paintings since 1955 he created the famous nail images, objects, machines, glass windows, mosaics and tapestries. Since 1960 he held a chair in 'freehand drawing and watercolor painting' at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen.
