    Irene Laffitte Mesa (San Sebastián, 1941–2001) was an important painter from Gipuzkoa whose work is distinguished by its vigorous, expressionist language and rich chromatic intensity.
    • Early training: She studied at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid and at the School of Arts and Crafts in San Sebastián. She received instruction from Vicente Cobreros Uranga and Eduardo Peña, and further refined her technique with the brothers Ramón and Antonio Pichoto.
    • Paris period: In the 1960s she moved to Paris, where her work was warmly received in prestigious galleries and praised by French critics for its balance and constructive strength.
