Ward, with whom he traveled to South America. In 1820, he exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design, where he continued to show his work sporadically. In the 1830s he drew illustrations for the medical texts of David Hosack, and also went into Virginia where he painted the Natural Bridge. In about 1836, he traveled West with a friend who had inherited property in Iowa.
