Jacques Pons was born in Avignon in 1936, and spent his childhood in Ardeche. He studied for four years at the academy Allard of Marseilles. He received special recognition for poster work with Chinese ink. He returned in 1958 to Ardèche where he painted and exhibited in local galleries. The next year he started working in a public works project and remained for eight years.

From 1966 to 1968, he was in Corsica where he took great interest in landscape painting, using rich color and tones that some of his viewers have described as violent.
