About James Dixon

  • Biography

    Post War California artist, James Budd Dixon was a San Franciso-born painter whose styles ranged from Social Realism to Abstract Expressionism. Because of problems with alcoholism, "his later works are uneven." (Hughes 311).

    James Dixon attended the University of California, Berkeley, 1920-1921, and 1922-1923; Mark Hopkins Institute of Art,1923-1926,1929; and the California School of Fine Arts,1945-1950. From 1950 to 1955, he taught at the California School of Fine Arts, 1950-1955 and at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1961-1965.
