At age 16, Lambdin studied in Philadelphia with miniaturist Edward Miles and then for three years with Thomas Sully. He also did portraits of soldiers including Arkansas writer Charles Fenton Mercer Noland in his military uniform. At age 16, Lambdin studied in Philadelphia with miniaturist Edward Miles and then for three years with Thomas Sully. In 1826, he returned to Pittsburgh to become a portrait painter, and opened a museum and art gallery patterned after that of Charles Willson Peale in Philadelphia.
