He was a well-known painter, but also made a name as a watercolourist, draughtsman, lithographer and etcher. He was a cousin of Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch. From 1839 up to 1847 he studied at the Haagse Academie where Salomon Leonard Verveer taught him the composition of village views and townscapes. Jan Weissenbruch was mainly active in The Hague, although he spent some time in Leerdam, Culemborg and in Belgium. He had a preference for painting very minutely detailed views of towns with bridges and canals, often with bright rays of sunlight.
