    Jan Weissenbruch was born in The Hague on 18 March 1822 and was known as the 'streetcorner painter' of the The Hague School. He was a well-known painter, but also made a name as a watercolourist, draughtsman, lithographer and etcher. He was a cousin of Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch.

    From 1839 up to 1847 he studied at the Haagse Academie where Salomon Leonard Verveer taught him the composition of village views and townscapes. Jan Weissenbruch was mainly active in The Hague, although he spent some time in Leerdam, Culemborg and in Belgium.
