    Born in Prague, Jan Minarik initially worked as a porcelain painter. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Prague, where he was a pupil of the painter and printmaker Maxmilian Pirner and from 1889-1896 of the landscape painter Edvard Julius Marak.

    Fascinated by the forests of his home country, Minarik created numerous landscapes as well as architectural views and still lifes. Today he is primarily known for his cityscapes of Prague. Preferred motifs were abandoned streets and courtyards. Many works by Minarik are now in the Prague City Museum. (tfa)
