    Jan van Ravesteyn was a Dutch painter born in The Hague in 1572 and became one of the leading portraitists of the Dutch Golden Age. Van Ravesteyn trained within the artistic milieu surrounding Michiel Janszoon van Mierevelt, whose influence is evident in his clarity of likeness, refined handling of costume, and attention to the social status of his sitters. By the early seventeenth century, van Ravesteyn had established a successful studio in The Hague, producing portraits for civic officials, military leaders, and members of the Dutch court.
