    Jane Simpson's practice challenges the idea of permanence and stasis, using materials such as ice, which itself is variable and unfixed. Ideas about the metamorphosis of reality into something more extraordinary are often central to Simpson's pieces. Her deep absorption with 'an everyday magic' constantly informs her work, as is demonstrated by the present work Frozen Chandelier, 2000, in which an18th Century Italian crystal chandelier is gradually covered in ice. Though it may be barely perceptible, the work undergoes a continuous process of change as the chandelier is submitted to a constant cooling and the layer of ice continues to build and expand.
