Under the protection of Louis XIV, he began to make drawings of the Rubens Gallery of the Luxembourg. Offered a brilliant position in Rome, he preferred to remain in Paris, but in 1715 he was summoned to Amsterdam where he painted the Czar and Czarina of Russia, as well as Peter the Great. They wanted to take him to their country, but again he insisted that his place was in Paris. In 1734 he became painter to the Chevalier d'Orleans.
