Jean Urbain Guerin was born in Strasbourg in 1761. He was a student of Huin then Regnault. Guerin was one of the best painters in miniature of his generation. He was a childhood friend of Marshal Kléber of whom he made several portraits. Guerin excelled in military portraits under the Empire. His works are present in all major collections of miniatures in France and abroad (Louvre, Victoria & Albert Museum and Wallace Collection in London, Metropolitan Museum, New York; al Zubov, Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo, Buenos Aires.
