    Jewel Woodard Simon (1911-1996) Painter, sculptor, print- maker, musician, songwriter, and civic leader.

    A native of Houston, Texas, she lived in Atlanta since 1939. She received the Bachelor of Arts degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Atlanta University and was the first African-American to be awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Atlanta School of Art. She studied painting under Hale Woodruff and sculpture under Alice Dunbar at Atlanta University. Mrs. Simon was a member and officer of the National Conference of Negro Artists since its inception in 1958.
