Born in Heilongjiang Province in 1955, Wang Jianan graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China in Beijing, 1982. He founded the first independent art studio in China after the Cultural Revolution. Wang inherited the Mi School techniques of the Song Dynasty, and then developed his own unique formula of mixing water and oil to color both sides of traditional handmade paper. In 1988, Wang Jianan came to England to work as a professional artist, and has since produced many works.
