Born in Zhejiang, Lang started photographing in early age. During 1928 to 1937 while working in Shanghai Times, he became the first photography journalist in Chinese news history. He devoted all his life to promote activity and education of photography, initiating many photography-related art groups. In 1930 Lang established Photography Department at Shanghai Xonjiang Girl's College, turning the first pages of photography education in China. He also taught at Taipei First Girl Senior High School, National Taiwan Art College and Chinese Culture University.
