    Jochen Seidel was born in 1924 in Bitterfeld and studied from 1946-48 at the Kunstgewerbeschule Burg Giebichenstein in Halle (Saale) as a pupil of Charles Crodel. In this period he created monumental propaganda murals to stay financially afloat. In 1953, Seidel moved to Berlin, where he began studying under Ernst Schumacher.

    In 1961 he was awarded the Kunstpreis junger Westen. His painting style evolved from the figurative towards the non-representational. Numerous exhibitions took place in the following years, for example in Vienna, Stockholm, Helsinki, Caracas, Buenos Aires and Pittsburgh. In 1964 Seidel moved to New York, where he held several teaching positions.
