About Joe Selby

  • Biography

Known for his ship portrait paintings, Joe Selby was born in Mobile, Alabama, and settled in Miami, Florida. He was an African-American painter whose subjects were the ships and yachts that docked at the Miami city pier between 1921 and 1959.

As a twelve-year old deck hand, he had lost a leg in a shipboard accident, but during the 1930s, his love of marine activity led him to join a steamer out of Mobile.
