Johann Richter, also known as Giovanni Richter, was a Swedish artist born in an unknown year. He received his initial training in landscape painting in Stockholm under David Klocker Ehrenstahl and Johan Sylvius before going to Venice to perfect his skills in vedute under the tutelage of Carlevarijs. Richter's works were initially mistaken for those of his master, but in 1994, a series of engravings by Bernhard Vogel representing views of Venice painted by Richter were discovered, leading to a reassignment of some vedute to Richter.
