    Johan Jacob Bennetter (born 30 September 1822 in Oslo , died 29 March 1904 on the Sun ) was originally sailor before he trained as a marine painter (ship painter) in the Hague and Paris .

    He painted abroad until he returned to Norway in 1880 and decorated home and studio in Sola old church on Jæren.

    The main work of his is Naval battles by Madagascar, owned by the National Gallery.

    As a trained marine painter, he was appreciated for vivid waves which was so difficult that not all his colleagues got them as well.
