    Johann Melchior Wyrsch was born on 21 Aug 1732 in Buochs, Unterwalden, Switzerland. He was the son of Balthazar Francis Xavier, counselor, police officer and diet of the messenger, and Anna Clara Ackermann. Wyrsch began his artistic education 1745 as a portraitist with teachers Michael Suter in Lucerne and Franz Anton Kraus in Einsiedeln.

    Between 1753 and 1754 he undertook a study trip to Italy, where he mainly lived in Rome and Naples. After his art education in Italy, he returned to Switzerland and began his artistic career as a portrait and the painting of the Church. In 1768 he moved to Besancon, where he painted many portraits of distinguished people.
