    Johann Christian Vollerdt (before 1708-1769) was born in Leipzig and was probably mainly active in Dresden, after his artistic training under Johann Alexander Thiele (1685-1752). His works were usually composed as counterparts and mostly appear in rather small formats. Dutch masters served the artist as the most important stylistic and thematic source of inspiration; works by Jan Griffier (c. 1652-1718), for instance, may have been accessible to the artist at the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden.
