In 1949, he was hospitalized at the Hospital Maria Gugging near Klosterneuburg due to a mental illness. His artistic talent was discovered in the clinic, where he was to remain until his death. In 1981, the Austrian psychiatrist Leo Navratil founded the 'House of Artists', to which Hauser moved along with other artists, who established the so-called 'Gugging Group', today the most important exponent of the Art Brut.
