Johann Jakob Hoch - Artist Info

About Johann Jakob Hoch

  • Biography

Johann Jacob Hoch was born into a family of painters from Mainz and was sent by Elector Friedrich Karl for training in Vienna in 1778. He resided in Paris as of 1783 and returned to Mainz in 1783, where he began work as a self-employed artist.

His exceedingly fine cabinet pieces in oil and gouache soon became popular collector's items among courtly and bourgeois patrons. The detailed, miniaturist character of these gouaches is typical of this German Enlightenment era artist's work.
