    John Robert Murray McCheyne R.S.A. was born in Edinburgh in 1911. He was educated at Kirkcaldy High School and later studied at The Edinburgh College Of Art. He was awarded the Chalmers Bursary at The Royal Scottish Academy School and worked under Alexander Carrick.

    After this he traveled Europe, including Copenhagen, Athens, Florence and Greece, coming back to take-up a position of Master Of Sculpture at Kings College, (now Newcastle University) in 1939. In addition to his role as a teacher he regularly exhibited works and undertook commissions.
