He was awarded the Chalmers Bursary at The Royal Scottish Academy School and worked under Alexander Carrick. After this he traveled Europe, including Copenhagen, Athens, Florence and Greece, coming back to take-up a position of Master Of Sculpture at Kings College, (now Newcastle University) in 1939.
