    John Arnold Wheeler’s chosen subject matter was horses and dogs. His specialty was horse racing scenes and equestrian portraits. He was born in Gloucestershire and was the son of John Wheeler, a stone cutter, and father of James Thomas Wheeler and Alfred Wheeler .

    He joined the Queen's Dragoon Guards, the Bays, where he acquired a good knowledge of horses. On his discharge, he took up sporting painting.

    John Wheeler was self-taught, based first in Bath and later in London. He had a number of distinguished patrons from the hunting community, including the Dukes of Beaufort, Portland, Westminster, Rutland and Hamilton, the Earls of Roseberry and Caithness and Baron Rothschild as well as many other titled gentry.
