Born in Los Angeles, he earned a degree in psychology from California State College at Los Angeles. He then served as an infantryman during the Korean War. He studied at the Art Center School in Los Angeles and at the Chouinard Art Institute. He transferred to the state college system where he earned a bachelors degree and did post graduate work in psychology, and also completed work for an art major and did post graduate work in art.

John was employed as an artist-designer-illustrator for North American Aviation, Aero Jet General. He has held Art Director positions with Bates Publications, National Missile, Barnes/Chase Advertising, and the Southland Sunday Magazine.
