    Born in England, John Byrne was raised in Canada and became a comic book artist in the mid 1970s. By the 1980s, he was working for Marvel and then DC and was "among the most popular and successful men in the business". His specialty was super heroes including "Spider-Man", "The Hulk", "Daredevil", "X-Men", and "Superman", which in 1986 he was asked to revitalize. This resulted in a six-part miniseries called "The Man of Steel", which brought him a lot of publicity.

    He studied at the Alberta College of Art, and did illustrations for college publications. His reputations was secured with his work on "X-Men", which he drew as well as contributed to the plot and character development. Eventually he returned to Marvel Comics.
