    John Gardiner Crawford was a painter and teacher, born in 1941 in Broadsea by Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He was an older brother of the artist Alistair Crawford.

    After Fraserburgh Academy John Crawford studied at Gray’s School of Art, 1959–64, including a postgraduate year, and at Patrick Allan-Fraser School of Art, Hospitalfield, Arbroath, Scotland. He was made a member of RSW in 1974, RBA in 1983 and RI in 1984.

    Among his awards was first prize for painting at Gray’s in 1962; first prize in Scottish Arts Council Open Exhibition in 1969; and Hunting Award, first prize for watercolour, 1982.

    Having come from a long line of fishermen, Crawford painted boats and the sea in great detail. His teaching appointm...
