    Artist, military, 1943. “Field Artillery Artist Wants to Start Classes at San Miguel USO. A familiar sight to Camp Roberts servicemen when they walk in the San Miguel USO these days are two paintings, ‘The Old House,’ and “Depot in Paso Robles,’ both the work of Pfc. John E. Kacere, soldier-artist of Hq. and Hq. Btry., FARC. Painted with opaque water colors, these two pieces of art depict an old ranch house near San Miguel Mission, and the Paso Robles depot. Private Kacere, who studied under Frederic Mizen, head of the Chicago art academy that bears his name, had launched his art career before induction into the Army. In his home town, Cedar Rapids, Ia., his paintings were on exhibition one week before the Army called.
