    Jorge Oteiza was born in 1908 in Orio, Spain, and died in 2003 in San Sebastián. He is regarded as one of the fundamental Basque artists of the 20th century, whose influence continues to resonate in the work of sculptors, painters, and architects from the 1950s to the present day.

    Self-taught, Oteiza began his career creating sculptures within the orbit of expressionism and primitivism, drawing inspiration from Gauguin, Picasso, and Derain. After a long stay in South America, he developed both the theoretical and practical foundations of his aesthetics. This intellectual exploration was reflected in texts such as Letter to the Artists of America (1944) and The Aesthetic Interpretation of American Megalithic Statuary (1952). During th...
