    Jorge Pineda was considered the leading illustrator of his time, which he owed to having been mentored by Teodoro Buenaventura. As a painter, he was a contemporary of Fernando Amorsolo yet he pursued a different trajectory in terms of subject matter. In his genre scenes, he favored traditional Filipino games like the Sungka, which he wonderfully captured in this work from 1933.

    1904 brought pride for the Filipino nation as medals were bagged by Filipino artists in the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair Exposition in Chicago, USA. The Gold went to Juan Luna, the Silver to Felix Resureccion-Hidalgo and the Bronze to Jorge Pineda.
