    José Van Gucht was a Belgian figurative painter, draftsman and etcher. His father was a make-up artist and hairdresser. José Van Gucht studied from about 1929 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, and he continued his studies at the Higher Institute in Antwerp with Isidore Opsomer and Pierre Paul.

    During World War II he was briefly a prisoner in Spandau. During his imprisonment he made drawings of his fellow prisoners. After World War II he began a wandering artist, traveling through Europe and living from the sale of artworks that he made on the spot. He settled in St. Idesbald , in an abandoned bunker, and later in Furnes in West Flanders.
