During World War II he was briefly a prisoner in Spandau. During his imprisonment he made drawings of his fellow prisoners. After World War II he began a wandering artist, traveling through Europe and living from the sale of artworks that he made on the spot. He settled in St. Idesbald , in an abandoned bunker, and later in Furnes in West Flanders. In Furnes was the old tavern "Three Kings", the town's oldest house, and this became his home...
