In 1925 he moved with his older brother to Mexico City and entered the San Carlos Academy to formally study art, having as teachers Leandro Izaguirre and Alfredo Ramos Martínez. Monroy's first collective exhibition was presented in the Palace of Mining and later installed a workshop in the street of Bucareli. Among his most representative murals is the Chapultepec School Center Autlán, a commission of the then Governor of Jalisco, Marcelino Garcia Barragan. The mural was restored in 2005, four years after the death of the artist. His funeral was realized in said campus and teachers and students gave him guard and honors.
